The QIPCO Champion Stakes is the blue riband race on the British Champions Day card and it is always one of the highlights of the season. The 2012 Champion Stakes will be the second edition of the race at Ascot having moved from Newmarket and it plays a key part of the newly formed British Champions Series. The Champion Stakes is the richest horse race in the UK with a prize fund in 2011 totalling £1.3million which will ensure it attracts the very best horses from across Europe.
The Champion Stakes is also known as the Middle Distance Championship as it is run over the 1m 2f distance which is often the most attractiive of the season. We had a bit of a surprise in the race in 2011 when the French raider Cirrus Des Aigles got up to beat hot favourite So You Think in a thrilling finish at Ascot.
