Royal Ascot History

\"RoyalThe first ever recorded running of a Royal Ascot meeting goes back all the way to 1711 and it was Queen Anne who was responsible and one of the reasons that this meeting is set apart from all others is that all the races are named after Royals who have made some impact on the Royal Meeting and Queen Anne has a race named after her. For many the Ascot Gold Cup is the highlight of the five day meeting and it was first run in 1807. The St James Palace Stakes is the first group one of the meeting and was first run in 1834. To gain entry to the Royal Enclosure is privilege that has to be earned as to gain entry, new applicants must be sponsored by existing Royal Enclosure badge holders who have attended more than eight times.
