In a terrific finish, Mastercraftsman held off a sustained challenge from Delegator to win the race by a neck. At one point in the final furlong Delegator got his neck in front but Mastercraftsman proved to be a very tough cookie and just managed to outstay his rival. Lord Shanakill ran a big race to take third. It was a sixth win in the last ten renewals of this race for master trainer, Aidan O’Brien and a 29th Royal Ascot success for jockey, Johnny Murtagh

Henrythenavigator produces a stunning run to win the day's feature race, setting a course record in the process. Credit to Raven's Pass who ran him close in the end, but Johnny Murtagh rode a textbook race to guide the favourite to victory. He was content to ride second last for much of the race, but he showed a great turn of foot two furlongs out to come through the middle of the pack.

1. Henrythenavigator 4-7f
2. Raven's Pass 13-2
3. Twice Over 7-1

The St James's Palace Stakes 2005 Result

Shamardal proved he is a top class 3 year old after taking Dubawi's place in the line up as he had shown when champion two-year-old last season. Shamardal broke well and having taken an early lead was always in control. He was pressed by a couple of rivals early in the straight but quickened in fine style around 3f out and the race was won at this point.

1 Shamardal 7/4f
2 Ad Valorem 8/1
3 Oratorio 13/2
